Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Matthew 6:19-21

In this text from Matthew we find Jesus giving what is now known as "The Sermon on the Mount". Jesus is urging the crowds to not get caught up in the temporary delights of this earth, for they will eventually fade to dust. He takes it further by saying that wherever your treasure is, wherever your priorities are, there your heart will also be. In speaking these words, Jesus, just as John the Baptist before him, is reminding people of what truly matters.

As we travel deeper into our relationship with Jesus we begin to recognize that there is a hollowness to the successes and desires that are of this world. Jesus came to bring us abundant life and to bring it now. As we are freed from our need to judge ourselves and view ourselves based on what we own and/or what our place in society says about us, we are free to grow and cultivate our true treasure which is the love and mercy that flows from Jesus.

Precious and Loving God, help me to see others and myself as you do. My treasure is in you. My treasure is in living my life according to your priorities. My true treasure is in loving others in your name.

How can we be in prayer with you?
Please let us know!

  1. This Advent season, do you need to take a hard look at what you consider your treasure to be?
  2. What gifts from God are you thankful for?

Daily Scripture

“Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her.”

Luke 1:45

Discuss as a family what it means to make a promise.

Throughout the Bible we learn how God always keeps his promises, and just like Mary, we can trust God, too!

Make a list of some of God’s promises to his people.
