Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

Romans 12:2

Paul’s letter to the Romans encourages us to not be conformed to the world but to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. He encourages us to use discernment as we journey through our spiritual lives. There is a certain level of thoughtlessness that permeates our culture. We are judged by the status quo. We are told what to think and not how to think by our politicians, by our teachers, and even by some of our preachers.

Paul is telling us not to conform, not to go through life unconsciously, but rather to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. We can renew our minds through prayer and meditation, through accepting God’s love so that we can better love ourselves and our neighbors, through silent time and times lived in community with other believers. There is a call and invitation (and just like with John the Baptist, a sense of urgency) in this scripture not just to accept the way things are but to journey deeper into our God given identities.

God, help me to transform my mind, to transform my way of thinking, and to transform my heart. Help the transformation that I have experienced because of your love, be evident in all I do and say.

How can we be in prayer with you?
Please let us know!

  1. What does renewing your mind, so that you can better hear God, mean to you?
  2. How can you begin to break free from some of the ways you are conforming to this world?
