Daily Scripture

He continued this subject with his disciples. “Don’t fuss about what’s on the table at mealtimes or if the clothes in your closet are in fashion. There is far more to your inner life than the food you put in your stomach, more to your outer appearance than the clothes you hang on your body. Look at the ravens, free and unfettered, not tied down to a job description, carefree in the care of God. And you count far more.”

Luke 12:22-24

Reflection
Reflection

Jesus’s desire for our freedom is wholehearted. His illustrations of the birds being carefree and in the care of God is a beautiful invitation for us to release the things that cause us anxiety and worry. John the Baptist walked a path of freedom; he wore little and ate locusts and honey. His mind was set on the things of God. He prepared the way for Jesus, who then prepares the way for us by showing us how to live well and by asking us to recognize the depth of our inner lives and spirituality. When we are not caught up in worry, we have so much more space to play and to pray. We are created in love, and as we are present to the love of God, our lives begin to take a different shape and form. As we follow Jesus and John, we can begin to shed our chains of oppressive fear and anguish, and we can turn our eyes and our priorities to what matters most.

Prayer
Prayer

Holy One, free me from anxiety and worry. Help me to live my life carefree and confident in your care. Take from me the burdens that weigh heavily on my heart and bless me with the knowledge that I am loved and held by you.

Amen.
