Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? Therefore we have been buried with him by baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.

Romans 6:3-4

Reflection
Reflection

If the meaning of baptism could be boiled down to one word, that word would be identification. Baptism speaks primarily of an identification with Jesus Christ. Notice the strength of the expressions in Romans – “baptized into Christ Jesus” and “baptized into his death” and “buried with him by baptism” and “raised from the dead… so we too might walk in newness of life.”

Your baptism is your personal identification with the greatest act of human history – the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Baptism doesn’t save you – salvation comes by faith alone (Ephesians 2:8-9). Baptism is a mark of your commitment to pass from the old life to the new life. It means you are joining the ranks and efforts of those who believe in Christ. Baptism is a mark of a renewed life. John the Baptist encouraged this renewed sence of life in his call to repentance, and Jesus models it.

Prayer
Prayer

Gracious Giver of Life, prepare my heart this Christmas season to be renewed. Remind me of what it means to pass from old life to new life in you. Teach me how to walk each day in the newness of life.

Amen.
