For in the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body – Jews or Greeks, slaves or free – and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.

Mark 2:16-17, 23-24, 27

Reflection
Reflection

So you claim to be a person of faith, and you believe you’ve been renewed. You try to live in God’s Kingdom and out of the current culture. But even renewed Christians can be pretty conventional, even allowing religious orthodoxy to stand in the way of love and forgiveness. Jesus ate with tax collectors and sinners, and the highly religious folks criticized. But Jesus said, “Healthy people don’t need a doctor, but sick people do. I didn’t come to call righteous people, but sinners.” Jesus fed the hungry from wheat harvested on the Sabbath, and the highly religious complained of breaking the Sabbath. But Jesus says, “The Sabbath was created for humans; humans weren’t created for the Sabbath.” We must always watch that conventional religiosity doesn’t trump love. The badge of a renewed life is not religious orthodoxy, but the full love of God and neighbor. This is the true mark of a renewed life.

Prayer
Prayer

Gracious and loving God, help me not to just believe in Jesus, but to believe Jesus, so I can follow him as a mature disciple. May I lead a truly renewed life marked by love not rule.

Amen.
