Pray like this: Our Father who is in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your Kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Matthew 6:9-13

Reflection
Reflection

Renewal demands a love of neighbor expressed in actions to achieve social justice. Beyond personal salvation lies a needy world, and Jesus was always working to make that world whole, to introduce the fullness of the Kingdom of God to the brokenness of the world. Very likely the Lord’s Prayer was aimed at the world of first century Galilee and Judea, where societal breakdown resulted from high taxation and a high level of poverty. We allegorize “daily bread” when it is most likely actual bread that was the issue. Forgiveness of trespasses and forgiving trespassers is a real need when poverty breaks down the fabric of family and community relationships. Jesus prays for the wholeness of God's Kingdom to come on earth; no metaphor, but a wish for wholeness to come to a troubled society. Temptation and evil are part of society’s breakdown, so Jesus prays that we might not be lead into temptation but delivered from evil. Today’s world has the same problems, so remember that when you pray the Lord’s Prayer. Don’t just spiritualize it; it’s a practical prayer for all times, particularly tough ones.

Gracious and loving God, may my life in you make me humble and merciful, a servant full of joy and gladness. Thank you that I have been cleansed by the Spirit charged to live a life marked by your teachings.

Amen.
